Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) – a clinicopathological spectrum comprising non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) – is the hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome and is widely recognised as a leading cause of liver morbidity and mortality. In line with its increasing disease burden, I will be discussing the epidemiology, risk factors and outcomes of this important problem; along with a brief update on the latest management of NAFLD.
