Diagnostic Radiology

What is Diagnostic Radiology?

Diagnostic radiology is a specialty that plays a very important role in the diagnosis and treatment of many diseases and injuries using safe doses of radiation to create detailed images of the area to be examined. By employing safe doses of radiation and advanced technology, healthcare professionals are able to produce detailed images of the body's internal structures. These images help physicians accurately identify health conditions, guide treatment decisions, and monitor the progress of various diseases.

The field of diagnostic radiology encompasses a wide range of imaging modalities, each utilized for specific diagnostic purposes. Some of the most commonly used techniques include imaging techniques such as x-ray, CT Scan, MRI and ultrasound to help diagnose and treat patients.

Interventional radiology (IR) is a specialized branch of diagnostic radiology that focuses on minimally invasive, image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat medical conditions. Utilizing imaging techniques such as X-rays, CT scans, and ultrasounds, interventional radiologists perform procedures that often involve inserting small instruments through tiny incisions, reducing the need for larger surgical openings.

Some common interventional radiology procedures include biopsies, angioplasty and stenting, embolization, drainage procedures, and vertebroplastry.

Interventional radiology is also sometimes referred to as vascular and interventional radiology because a significant portion of the procedures focuses on blood vessels and circulatory issues. Through these minimally invasive techniques, patients often experience less pain, reduced recovery time, and fewer complications compared to traditional surgeries.
