Ophthalmology

What is Ophthalmology?

Ophthalmology is a surgical speciality that involves the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders and diseases such as cataract, glaucoma, eye infections, floaters and flashers, retinal detachment, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy. It also treats conditions related to the anatomy and functions of the eye.

Common procedures are monitoring mild eye and vision conditions, as well as prescribing and fitting glasses and contact lenses to correct vision problems for long-sightedness and short-sightedness.

Surgical procedures include cataract surgery, reconstructive surgery to repair trauma and abnormalities, tumour and cyst removal, chronic conditions like diabetic retinopathy and thyroid disorders, tear duct infections or blockages, repairing torn or detached retinas, and corneal transplants.

Other common Ophthalmology conditions include:

Refractive Errors: Conditions that affect the way the eye focuses light, resulting in blurred vision. These include Myopia, Hyperopia, Astigmatism, Presbyopia.

Cataracts: Clouding of the eye's natural lens, leading to blurred vision and glare.

Glaucoma: A group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, often associated with increased intraocular pressure.

Eye Tumors: Benign or malignant tumors affecting the eye or surrounding structures.

Ophthalmologists utilize a wide array of diagnostic tools to assess vision and eye health, including visual acuity testing, refraction to determine prescriptions, ophthalmoscopy to examine internal structures, tonometry to measure eye pressure, and visual field testing.

They also employ various imaging techniques like OCT and angiography for detailed visualization. Therapeutically, ophthalmologists prescribe medications like eye drops and may perform laser surgery for conditions such as diabetic retinopathy. Furthermore, they conduct a range of surgical procedures, including cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, and corneal transplants.
