Blepharitis Treatment

How is Blepharitis treated?

Blepharitis is an eyelid disorder where the eyelid is inflamed. The causes of eyelid inflammation could range from dandruff, to an allergic reaction to makeup, or an infection. It can cause itchy eyelids and dry eyelids and can be a chronic condition that requires daily attention. Treatment focuses on reducing inflammation, relieving discomfort, and preventing complications such as styes or damage to the eyes.

The first step in managing blepharitis is maintaining good eyelid hygiene. Patients are usually advised to clean their eyelids regularly by applying a warm compress to loosen crusts and oils, followed by gentle scrubbing of the eyelid margins with diluted baby shampoo or special lid-cleaning wipes. This helps remove debris and reduce bacterial build-up along the lash line. Consistency with this daily cleaning routine is often the most effective way to control the condition.

If eyelid hygiene alone is not enough, medications may be used. These can include antibiotic ointments or drops to reduce bacterial involvement, oral antibiotics for more severe or persistent cases, and anti-inflammatory treatments such as steroid eye drops or ointments. For patients whose blepharitis is linked to other conditions, such as rosacea or seborrheic dermatitis, treating the underlying skin condition also helps improve symptoms.
