Biography

Dr. Bobby Cheng is a Senior Consultant Surgeon and an expert in Cataracts and Comprehensive Ophthalmology. He subspecializes in the fields of Vitreoretinal Medicine and Surgery, and Uveitis.

Prior to private practice, he was Consultant to the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) and continues to be a Visiting Consultant today. He was also a Clinical Lecturer at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and currently, Adjunct Research Scientist at the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI).

In 1993, Dr. Cheng obtained his medical degree from NUS. Upon graduation, he pursued his Master of Medicine in Ophthlmology and won the prestigious Gold Medal award. He was later admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Academy of Medicine Singapore.

Dr. Cheng subsequently completed his training in Vitreoretinal Medicine and Surgery at SNEC’s Ocular Inflammation and Immunology department. In 2012, he was awarded an overseas scholarship from SNEC to pursue a Fellowship in Ocular Inflammation and Immunology at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, U.K., where he trained under Professor JV Forrester. Upon his return, Dr. Cheng embarked on a one-and-a-half-year fellowship program in Vitreoretinal Medicine and Surgery at the SNEC.

Dr. Cheng is an active clinician, researcher and teacher with over 20 publications in peer-reviewed journals. Over the course of his career, he has been invited to present at more than 50 regional and international conferences. Dr. Cheng has won numerous research awards such as the Young Investigators Award (Clinical category) at the 20th Singapore-Malaysia Joint Meeting in Ophthalmology in conjunction with the 4th Singapore National Eye Research Meeting (2002), Best Poster Award at the 6th International Symposium on Uveitis in Mestre, Italy in 2004, Best Poster Award at the 5th European Vitreoretinal Society Meeting in Orebro, Sweden in 2005.

His current research interest includes Dengue Maculopathy as well as Fourier Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), the scanning of the retina.

Dr. Cheng's specialty interests are uveitis and vitreoretinal medicine and surgery.
