Biography

Dr. Alvin Ng Choon Yong is a Consultant Respiratory Physician and Intensivist with The Respiratory Practice. He was the President of the Society of Intensive Care Medicine as well as the Vice President of the Singapore Thoracic Society. He was also an executive committee member of the Chapter of Intensivist and currently, an executive committee member of the Chapter of Respiratory Physicians, Academy of Medicine Singapore. In addition, he had served in various hospitals’ Medical Advisory Board. Dr. Ng currently volunteers as the Chief Medical Officer of the St John's Brigade Singapore and is a member of the Singapore St John Council.

Dr. Ng was awarded the Singapore Armed Forces Medical Scholarship in 1996 to study Medicine in the National University of Singapore (NUS). He graduated from NUS in 2001 and had went on to train successfully in Internal Medicine and became both a Specialist in Respiratory Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine. Dr. Ng has special interests in Obstructive Airway Disease like Asthma and COPD as well as Invasive Mechanical Ventilation for ICU patients. Dr. Ng believes passionately in providing personalized patient-centric care to all patients.

Prior to private practice, he worked as a Consultant at Changi General Hospital’s Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, and held the position of Deputy Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit. Dr. Ng was also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Singapore Armed Forces and his last appointment was Commanding Officer of the Medical Classification Centre (MCC) and he was in charge of PES (Physical Employment Status) assignments for all SAF and Mindef personnel. He holds the title and certification as the Singapore Armed Forces Consultant for Respiratory and Intensive Care Medicine.

Dr. Ng believes in training the next generation of clinical doctors and had served as the Deputy Commander of the SAF Medical Training Institute which oversees all the medical training for the SAF. He was previously the Medical Director for the Singapore Armed Forces Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Centre and is currently the Medical Director of the St John Singapore National Association of Emergency Medical Technician Course. Dr. Ng also holds numerous training position including Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Instructor, Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Instructor, Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS) Instructor, Basic Assessment and Support in Intensive Care (BASIC) Instructor and EuSim Advance Medical Training Simulation Instructor. Previously in Changi General Hospital, he held the teaching positions in the Respiratory Medicine Core Faculty, Internal Medicine Physician Faculty, Intensive Care Medicine Subspecialty Faculty as well as NUS Undergraduate Clinical Faculty.

Dr. Ng had also served in overseas peacekeeping missions as well as disaster relief efforts. He was awarded the United Nations Peace Keeping Medal as well as the United Nations Force Commander Letter of Commendation for services rendered as part of the medical team for the United Nations Mission in Support of East Timor.

Dr. Ng believes strongly in contributing back to the community and continues to be active in both the Society of Intensive Care Medicine (SICM) and the Singapore Thoracic Society (STS) in order to advance intensive care medicine and respiratory medicine activities in Singapore. Dr. Ng was also the Organising Chairman of the 2017 SGANZICS Asia Pacific Intensive Care Forum whose aim is to support the Low-Income Countries in the field of Intensive Care Medicine and to exchange ideas and best practices between the western nations and Asia. He was also the Organizing Chairman of the 2019 Farrer Park Hospital Annual Scientific Meeting.

Dr. Ng's specialty interests are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), invasive mechanical ventilation for ICU patients and obstructive airway disease.
