Cardiology

What is Cardiology?

Cardiology is a medical specialty that deals with the treatment of diseases and disorders of the cardiovascular system. The cardiovascular system consists of the heart, veins and arteries, and is responsible for transporting oxygen, nutrients, and hormones throughout the body and removing waste products.. Cardiology also deals with related disorders that affect the heart, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.

Diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular conditions range from congenital defects to heart diseases including congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease.

Common Cardiovascular conditions

Cardiologists specialize in diagnosing and treating a variety of heart conditions, including:

  • Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)
A condition in which plaque builds up in the arteries, reducing blood flow to the heart.
  • Heart Failure
A condition in which the heart can't pump enough blood to meet the body's needs.
  • Arrhythmias
Irregular heart rhythms that can cause symptoms like palpitations, dizziness, or fainting.
  • Valvular Heart Disease
A condition in which the heart valves don't function properly.
  • Congenital Heart Defects
    Heart defects present at birth.
  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
A condition in which blood pressure is consistently too high.

Cardiologists utilize a variety of diagnostic tools, including electrocardiograms (ECGs) to assess electrical activity, echocardiograms to visualize heart structure, and exercise stress tests to monitor function. They also perform cardiac catheterization and coronary angiography to visualize blood vessels and identify blockages.

Treatment options range from medications such as antihypertensives and statins to minimally invasive procedures like angioplasty and stenting. For complex cases, cardiologists may collaborate with cardiac surgeons for open-heart surgery.
