Dr. Daniel Tan Yat Harn is the Director and Senior Radiation Oncologist at the Asian Alliance Radiation & Oncology (AARO), a private radiation and oncology group focusing on advanced cancer treatment technology.
Dual-trained in Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy, Dr. Tan is well-versed with modern radiation technology, including (but not limited to) 3D conformal external beam radiotherapy, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy, Image Guided Radiation Therapy, Volumetric Arc Therapy, Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), and Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT).
Dr. Tan graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2002, where he later served as co-chairperson of the Neuro-Oncology Cancer Service Line Development workgroup and clinical lecturer at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Between 2003 to 2015, Dr. Tan worked at the Division of Radiation Oncology at the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) where he was trained in brain radiosurgery and spine radiosurgery by Dr. Chua Eu Tiong and Associate Professor Arjun Sahgal respectively. He would later return to establish the Novalis Spine Radiosurgery service in NCSS, the first within the Southeast Asia (SEA).
In 2008, Dr. Tan received the Health Manpower Development Programme Award for Advanced Training in Clinical Oncology in the UK. He obtained his Fellowship in Clinical Oncology from the UK’s Royal College of Radiologists in 2011 before being admitted as a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore in Radiation Oncology in 2012. He received his sub-specialty training on neuro-oncology at international premier centres, including Proton Therapy at University of Pennsylvania’s Roberts Proton Therapy Centre in USA.
His work would lead him to the international conferences of ASTRO, ASCO, and ISRS, where he presented his published journals on neuro-oncology, SRS, and SBRT. Dr. Tan continued to take his innovations overseas, promoting the SBRT process at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Human Health Project 6065 in 2012. There, he organised the first SBRT training course, introducing participants from 11 countries to the advanced technique.
His passion for advancing cancer care also brought him to international cancer centres in China, Russia and Myanmar. He also underwent training at the University of Pittsburgh where he collaborated with radiation oncology units as part of efforts to bring modern radiotherapy standards and technology to Asia. Upon his return, he developed the first Spine, Prostate and Liver SRS/SBRT program in SEA.
In 2015, Dr. Tan started his own private practice, AARO, with the vision of providing personalised, quality care to cancer patients. Through AARO, he introduced sub-specialized radiation oncology services to the regional private sector.
Over 20 years, Dr. Tan has amassed clinical experience in treating benign and cancerous tumors within the brain, spine, breast and prostate. His clinical expertise lies in SRS and SBRT, a highly targeted and ablative radiation treatment that can eliminate primary and metastatic tumors within just 1-5 sessions.
Today, Dr. Tan still takes time to understand each patient’s condition and personal needs. Armed with expertise and backed by science, Dr. Tan is committed to providing comprehensive and personalized cancer treatment to achieve the best possible outcomes.
