Biography

Dr. Tan Shi Ming is a MOH-accredited orthopedic surgeon specializing in orthopedic conditions, particularly foot and ankle disorders.

Throughout his school years, he excelled as a student athlete in fields such as waterpolo, swimming, hockey and basketball, representing his different schools in these sports. In the field of waterpolo, he achieved gold medal at the National Championships and represented the nation at the Combined Schools level and National Age-group levels. His keen interests in sports and lifelong dream to pursue medicine led him to a career in orthopedics where he could put his passion into treating injured athletes and returning them to their beloved sports.

This path took him through medical school at the National University of Singapore and he continued his specialist training in the Singhealth Orthopaedic Residency Programme. In the course of training, he successfully obtained these higher qualifications:

  • Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh)
  • Masters of Medicine (Singapore)
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) (Orth)

Post-residency training, Dr. Tan continued sub-specialty training in the field of foot and ankle surgery, doing a prestigious fellowship at Bristol, United Kingdom under Dr. Steve Hepple and Dr. Ian Winson. He went on to further his sub-specialty training with Professor Victor Valderrabano in Basel, Switzerland and Dr. Yves Tourne in Grenoble, France.

His wide surgical repertoire was further augmented with stints in Australia and Germany. As a lifelong athlete who continues to do endurance running and football, Dr Tan understands the physical and emotional aspects patients face when they encounter injuries and orthopedic conditions.

He enjoys working with patients on treatment and rehabilitation plans to help them get back on their feet and return them to their desired activity level. Dr. Tan is well-trained to diagnose and treat all simple and complex orthopedic pathology and specializes in lower extremity reconstructive surgery, particularly around the foot and ankle.

While he enjoys all aspects of orthopedic surgery, his areas of expertise include sports-related foot and ankle injuries, cartilage restoration and joint preservation, minimally invasive and arthroscopic treatment of various foot and ankle conditions, ankle replacement surgery, primary and revision forefoot surgery, and innovative techniques to allow accelerated rehabilitation.

Dr. Tan has authored numerous papers and textbook chapters on disorders of the foot and ankle, and continues to contribute to both undergraduate and post-graduate education through his role as Assistant Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School and NUS-YLL School of Medicine as well as core teaching faculty at Singhealth Orthopaedic Residency Programme, Arthrex and AO Trauma Foundation.

Dr. Tan's specialty interest include minimally invasive bunion treatment, sports injuries of the foot and ankle, ankle arthroscopy, joint replacement surgery, and fracture specialist.
