Biography

Dr. Anandakumar Vellasamy is a Swiss-fellowship-trained, board-accredited Orthopedic Specialist Surgeon with a subspecialty interest in complex foot and ankle conditions, including sports injuries and lower limb trauma.

Prior to private practice, Dr. Ananda was a consultant at Singapore General Hospital and Sengkang General Hospital. His clinical practice and expertise involve minimally invasive surgical techniques addressing complex foot and ankle disorders, traumatic injuries of the lower limb and various sports injuries.

Dr. Ananda successfully performed the first lateral total ankle replacement surgery in South East Asia for end stage ankle arthritis. The repertoire of his use of minimally invasive surgery techniques span from calcaneal fractures to foot and ankle deformity corrections including flat feet and bunion corrections.

Dr. Ananda graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Science (MBBS) from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2003. He was awarded the Best Houseman Award during his medical posting as a Houseman and subsequently pursued his postgraduate training in Orthopedic Surgery and obtained his fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, U.K. Dr. Ananda received the N. Balachandran Memorial Lectureship award in the final year of his Orthopedic Residency in 2014. The following year in 2015, he was also awarded the prestigious AO Trauma fellowship award.

Dr. Ananda was awarded the Health Manpower Development Plan award in 2016, enabling him to pursue his fellowship training in Switzerland under world-renowned foot and ankle surgeons Professor Beat Hintermann, Professor Fabian Krause and Professor Karl Stoffel at Kantonsspital Baselland and University Hospital of Bern Inselspital. Dr. Ananda further honed his skills by training with Dr. Alexandro Pellegrino at the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at Etzelclinic in Zurich.

Apart from clinical work, Dr. Ananda is also active in academia. He teaches medical students at NUS’ Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Duke-NUS Medical School as well as orthopedic surgery residents and family medicine trainees. He was part of the Master of Medicine in Orthopedic Surgery Committee involved in orchestrating the training of junior orthopedic surgery residents.

Dr. Ananda has also held and holds membership in international groups such as the AO Foundation, American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), European Society of Sports, Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, the Singapore Orthopaedic Association and the Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society of Singapore. Dr. Ananda had also been invited to speak at numerous orthopedic surgery conferences organized by AAOS, European Society of Sports, ESSKA, European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFFORT) and at the ASEAN Orthopaedic Association (AOA).

Outside of work, Dr. Ananda spends much time with his family, including elderly parents, and is also an avid cyclist. As a member of the Singapore Cycling Federation, he has also been involved in various fundraising events to help the elderly and needy.

Dr Ananda's specialty interests are complex foot and ankle conditions, lower limb trauma and sports injuries.
