Otorhinolaryngology

What is ​Otorhinolaryngology?

​Otorhinolaryngology is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis, care and treatment of of diseases and disorders of the ear, nose, throat and related structures of the head and neck. It treats disorders like sleep apnea and allergies such as allergic rhinitis and asthma that may be congenital or acquired.

Surgery may be required in cases to remove both benign and malignant tumours or to treat congenital deformities. Common issues treated include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), hoarseness or difficulty in swallowing, vertigo and balance disorders as well as sinusitis and migraine, as well as the following:

Ear

  • Hearing Loss: Conductive, sensorineural, and mixed hearing loss due to various causes, including infections, trauma, and age-related changes.
  • Otitis Media: Inflammation or infection of the middle ear, commonly seen in children.
  • Tinnitus: Ringing or buzzing in the ears.
  • Vertigo and Balance Disorders: Conditions affecting the vestibular system, leading to dizziness and imbalance.

Nose

  • Sinusitis: Inflammation or infection of the sinuses.
  • Allergic Rhinitis: Inflammation of the nasal passages due to allergies.
  • Nasal Polyps: Growths in the nasal passages that can obstruct breathing.
  • Deviated Septum: A crooked nasal septum that can impede airflow.

Throat

  • Tonsillitis and Adenoiditis: Inflammation or infection of the tonsils and adenoids.
  • Pharyngitis: Inflammation of the pharynx (throat).
  • Laryngitis: Inflammation of the larynx (voice box).
  • Swallowing Disorders: Difficulties with swallowing, often related to neurological or muscular problems.

Head and Neck:

  • Head and Neck Cancer: Cancers affecting the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, sinuses, and salivary glands.
  • Sleep Apnea: A sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep.
  • Thyroid and Parathyroid Disorders: Conditions affecting the thyroid and parathyroid glands in the neck.
