Neurology

What is Neurology?

Neurology is a medical specialty that deals with the anatomy, functions, and disorders of nerves and the nervous system. The nervous system is a complex network that controls and coordinates bodily functions, including sensation, movement, thought, emotion, and behavior. It comprises the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. Neurological disorders can have a debilitating effect to an individual, causing loss of memory function and affecting a person's ability to perform day-to-day activities.

Neurologists are medical doctors who possess specialized training in the intricate workings of the nervous system and its impact on overall health and well-being. Neurologists play a crucial role in improving the lives of individuals affected by neurological conditions, providing comprehensive care that encompasses diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.

Some common neurological conditions include:

  • Cerebrovascular Diseases: Conditions affecting the blood vessels in the brain, such as a Stroke, Transient Ischemic Attack, or Aneurysms.
  • Headaches & Migraines
  • Epilepsy: A neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures.
  • Movement Disorders: Conditions that affect movement control, such as Parkinson's Disease, involuntary Tremors, and Dystonia.
  • Dementia: A decline in cognitive function, including memory, thinking, and judgment, often affecting older adults. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia.
  • Brain Tumors: Benign or malignant tumors that grow in the brain.

Non-invasive imaging procedures are used to diagnose neurological disorders. Some of the procedures includes coronary angiography, ultrasound and different type of scans such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET) scans to assist in detecting irregularities in the brain. Medications, physical therapy, surgery and rehabilitation are other forms of treatment available.
