Biography

Dr. Chang Haw Chong is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in orthopedic sports medicine. He graduated from the National University of Singapore Medical School in 1994. In 1998, he was awarded the titles of Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow. The same year, he obtained a Master of Medicine in General Surgery. In 2001, he received his specialty qualification in orthopedic surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Dr. Chang received a scholarship from the Ministry of Health's Health Manpower Development Program (HMDP) to pursue further training as a clinical researcher in orthopedic sports medicine at the University of Louisville in the United States. He was mentored by Professor David N.M. Caborn, a renowned expert in orthopaedic sports medicine and a leading researcher in the field, with extensive expertise in the application of allografts in sports reconstruction surgery and meniscus transplantation. Professor Caborn is one of the top orthopaedic surgeons in the United States, specializing in the use of allografts in sports reconstruction surgery and meniscus transplantation.
Dr. Chang previously served as an orthopedic consultant surgeon at Changi General Hospital and as Deputy Director of the Changi Sports Medicine Center (CSMC). He led the development of CSMC's orthopedic sports medicine services and was promoted to Director of Orthopedic Sports Medicine Services in 2007. Among his many achievements, he founded the CSMC Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Program in 2004, which treats over 250 ACL injury patients annually, including national football players and Olympic athletes.

As a dedicated educator, Dr. Chang is a clinical lecturer at the National University of Singapore. For his contributions to undergraduate teaching in orthopedic surgery, he has been awarded the “Best Orthopedic Teacher Award” multiple times. As the Director of Orthopedic Sports Medicine at Changi General Hospital, he has provided orthopedic sports medicine training to orthopedic surgeons across Asia. He has also organized cadaveric workshops on shoulder arthroscopy, bilateral ACL reconstruction, and autologous cartilage cell transplantation, offering specialized training to local and international orthopedic surgeons.

As a research-oriented scholar, Dr. Zhang has published over 20 peer-reviewed papers, most of which have been featured in prestigious sports medicine journals such as the “American Journal of Sports Medicine” and the “Journal of Arthroscopy.” He also contributed the chapter on “Allograft Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction” in the fourth edition of “Insall and Scott's Knee Surgery,” a textbook for knee surgeons. He has also co-authored a paper on a new surgical technique for double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. He has been invited to deliver lectures on sports medicine-related topics at numerous conferences both domestically and internationally. Dr. Chang currently serves as a member of the Editorial Board of the Singapore Medical Journal.

Dr. Chang's specialty interests include robot-assisted partial knee arthroplasty (Makoplasty) and the application of allografts in sports reconstruction surgery and meniscus transplantation.
