Biography

Dr. Tan Sok Chuen is an orthopaedic surgery specialist in Singapore subspecialising in hip and knee surgery. A graduate of the National University of Singapore (MBBS, 2004), she holds the MMed (Ortho), MRCSEd and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. Before private practice she was a Consultant at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, while serving as Adjunct Assistant Professor and winning the Best Undergraduate Tutor award (2014) and the Healthcare Manpower Development Award (2013).

Her skills span the full spectrum of hip and knee care: joint replacement (partial and total), complex revision arthroplasty, minimally invasive and robotic-assisted techniques, arthroscopic ACL reconstruction, meniscus and cartilage repairs, sports injuries and osteoporosis treatment. Her training is world-class — clinical fellowships at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford (renowned for partial knee replacement) and the London Health Sciences Centre, Canada (a leading North American revision-joint centre).

Dr Tan is Singapore's first female hip and knee replacement surgeon. In 2021 she co-founded Hip & Knee Orthopaedics at Mount Elizabeth Novena with her husband, Dr. Adrian Lau. As a mother of a young son, she brings rare empathy for the modern working woman, designing treatment around mobility and minimum downtime so patients can age gracefully with full quality of life. She is also a Visiting Consultant at Thomson Medical Centre.

Off the operating table, Dr. Tan is an avid fitness enthusiast. She rises at 5am for at least an hour of exercise daily — running, Muay Thai or boxing — and practises various forms of martial arts. Running, she says, is her form of meditation, and she believes a healthy body and a healthy mind go a long way — a philosophy she extends to her patients, helping them stay active and pain-free at every stage of life.

Dr. Tan's specialty interest include Knee Replacement (Robotic), Hip Replacement (Anterior Approach) ACL Reconstruction Surgery, Arthroscopic Meniscus Repair, Arthroscopic Cartilage Repair, Trauma and Fractures, Complex Hip and Knee Revision Arthroplasty.
