What is Obstetrics and Gynecology?

Obstetrics and gynecology is a medical specialty that is concerned with the care of the female reproductive system. It combines obstetrics which involves the management of pregnancy and childbirth, as well as gynaecology, which involves the general health of the female reproductive system as well as the treatment of conditions related to the reproductive organs. This includes conditions affecting the cervix, uterus and the ovaries.

OB/GYNs address a wide range of conditions, from routine gynecological care to complex pregnancy and childbirth management and are trained to address the following conditions:

• Menstrual Disorders
  Addressing irregular periods, heavy bleeding, painful periods, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
• Endometriosis
  A condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, causing pain and potential infertility.
• Uterine Fibroids
  Non-cancerous growths in the uterus that can cause heavy bleeding, pain, and pressure.
• Ovarian Cysts
  Fluid-filled sacs that develop on the ovaries, often causing pain or menstrual irregularities.

  An infection of the female reproductive organs, often caused by sexually transmitted infections.
