Neurosurgery

What is Neurosurgery?

Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disorders that affect the entire nervous system. This includes the brain, blood vessels, spinal column, spinal cord and peripheral nerves.

Neurosurgeons are medical doctors who have undergone training in the diagnosis, management, and surgical treatment of a wide spectrum of neurological conditions. Their address complex problems that affect the brain, spine, and peripheral nerves, requiring a balance of technical skill, precision, and knowledge of neuroanatomy and physiology.

Conditions that require neurosurgery may be trauma-related, for example injury to the head and spine where internal bleeding is present. Infection-related cases may be meningitis, which is a bacterial or viral infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Degenerative diseases are more common among older patients and include aneurysms and Parkinson's disease.

Neurosurgery encompasses a range of other conditions, including:

  • Brain Tumors
These can be benign or malignant growths that arise within the brain, potentially causing pressure on surrounding brain tissue, disrupting neurological function, and leading to a variety of symptoms. Neurosurgeons work to remove or reduce the size of tumors, aiming to preserve neurological function and improve quality of life.
  • Cerebrovascular Diseases
These conditions affect the blood vessels supplying the brain and can lead to life-threatening events such as strokes. This includes conditions like Carotid Artery Stenosis and Aneurysms.
  • Spinal Disorders
These encompass a variety of conditions affecting the spine, including Herniated Discs, Spinal Stenosis, Spinal Cord Injuries.
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries
These injuries result from external forces impacting the head, such as falls, motor vehicle accidents, or sports injuries.
