Internal Medicine

What is Internal Medicine?

Internal Medicine is concerned with the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of disorders of the internal organs of the body - the heart, lungs, the liver and gastro-intestinal tract, the kidneys and urinary tract, the brain, the spinal column, nerves, muscles and joints.

Many common diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer can affect several internal organs of the body. Serious diseases can be difficult to diagnose as the symptoms may be similar to those of other illnesses and might not show symptoms until the disease has progressed to an advanced stage.

Internal medicine encompasses a wide spectrum of medical subspecialties, including:

  • Cardiology: Focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, and arrhythmias.
  • Pulmonary Medicine: Addressing diseases of the respiratory system, including pneumonia, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Gastroenterology: Concerned with the digestive system, encompassing conditions like peptic ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, and liver cirrhosis.
  • Nephrology: Specializing in the diagnosis and management of kidney diseases, including acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, and dialysis.
  • Endocrinology: Focusing on hormonal disorders and metabolic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, thyroid diseases, and adrenal insufficiency.
  • Rheumatology: Addressing autoimmune diseases and musculoskeletal disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and gout.
  • Infectious Diseases: Managing infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.
  • Hematology: Concerned with diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs, such as anemia, leukemia, and lymphoma.
  • Oncology: Focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
