Periodontics

What is Periodontics?

Periodontics is a dental specialty that diagnoses and treats conditions affecting the gums and supporting bone around the teeth. The periodontium, the term for these supporting structures, plays a crucial role in maintaining overall oral health and preventing tooth loss.

Periodontal diseases include early gum disease such as Gingivitis where bacterial plaque affects the gums and Periodontitis, where bacterial plaque spreads below the gum line to cause inflammation and infection to destroy supporting tissues and bones around the teeth. If left untreated, it can progress to more severe forms, such as periodontitis, which can result in bone loss and tooth loss.

Periodontists are dental specialists in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases/issues, and in the placement of dental implants. They are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures like repairing gum recession.

Periodontists employ various techniques to address gum disease, including:

  • Non-surgical Treatment
This involves scaling and root planing, a deep cleaning procedure to remove plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces and below the gum line.
  • Surgical Treatment
In more advanced cases, surgical procedures may be necessary to remove diseased tissue, reduce deep pockets, and promote tissue regeneration.
  • Dental Implants
Periodontists are also skilled in placing dental implants, artificial tooth roots that support crowns, bridges, or dentures.
