Geriatric Medicine

What is Geriatric Medicine?

As we advance in age, our bodies go through natural changes, and our risk of developing multiple chronic medical diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart failure, continence issues (amongst many others) increases. This can make managing our health and the health of older adults with multiple chronic conditions and needs more complex. Geriatric medicine is a specialized field of medicine that focuses on the healthcare needs of older adults.

Geriatric medicine specialists (Geriatricians) are trained in the care for the older adult (65 years and older) with multiple medical problems. They are also trained in dealing with age related issues such as Falls and Balance, Osteoporosis, Memory problems or Dementia and Mood and sleep disorders.

Geriatricians can help older adults manage their health conditions, improve their quality of life, and maintain their independence. They can provide a range of services, including:

  • Comprehensive Health Assessments: To identify and address potential health problems.
  • Medication Management: To optimize medication use and reduce the risk of adverse drug reactions.
  • Nutrition Counseling: To ensure adequate intake of nutrients and prevent malnutrition.
  • Fall Prevention Strategies: To reduce the risk of falls and injuries.
  • Pain Management: To help manage chronic pain.
  • Rehabilitation: To improve physical function and mobility.
  • End-of-Life Care: To provide compassionate care and support during the final stages of life.

If you or a loved one is an older adult, consider consulting with a geriatrician. They can help you navigate the complexities of aging and maintain a healthy and fulfilling life.
