The birth of a baby and the postpartum period is often a keenly anticipated and joyful occasion for the mother and family members. However, it is also a demanding period characterized by biological, psychological and social changes for the new mother. This makes women vulnerable to a range of psychiatric disorders. Early diagnosis and management of psychiatric disorders are very important as if left untreated the psychiatric conditions can have ramifications for the mother, the child and the family.

The CME talk will cover ‘Blues’, Postpartum Anxiety, Postpartum Depression and Postpartum Psychosis. Risk factors for each will be presented as well as brief overviews of each condition including clinical presentations, and the course of each condition; The clinical management and sequelae will be discussed.

The use of Pharmacotherapy and safety for the mother and baby, as well as the usefulness of psychological therapy will be presented.

Dr. Rathi Mahendran
Psychiatrist

Dr. Rathi Mahendran is a highly respected psychiatrist in Singapore with decades of experience in the field of mental health. She is currently practicing at Mind Care Clinic (Farrer Park Medical Centre) and also Mind Care Clinic@SBF.

Dr. Rathi has a wealth of experience in treating a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Her subspecialty areas of interest are in Geriatric Psychiatry and Psycho-Oncology.

Prior to joining Mind Care Clinic, Dr. Rathi led the Memory Clinic services in the National University Hospital of Singapore. She also led the team in providing psychosocial care for outpatients at the National University Cancer Institute, Singapore (NCIS). In recognition of her contribution to the field of psychiatry, Dr. Rathi was awarded the Distinguished Psychiatrist Award by the Singapore Psychiatric Association in 2016.

In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Rathi is also actively involved in research in the field of mental health. She has published numerous articles in academic journals and has presented her research findings at conferences around the world. Her research focuses on a range of topics, including the use of technology in mental health care, the impact of stigma on mental health, and the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. She was also appointed as Clinical Lead in Medical Education at the National University Health System.

Dr. Rathi's speciality interests are in Geriatric Psychiatry and Psycho-Oncology.
