Dr Lau Chien Li Cheryl

General Surgeon

Adj Asst Prof Cheryl Lau graduated from medical school at the National University of Singapore and obtained her fellowship diploma from the Royal college of Surgeons of Edinburgh. She completed her advanced surgical training in National University Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Dr Cheryl has extensive experience in minimally invasive colorectal and general surgical procedures, diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies, hernias, gallbladder surgeries, treatment of colorectal cancers and benign colorectal diseases, complex perianal disorders and bowel disorders.

Adj Asst Prof Cheryl was awarded the Ministry of Health Human Manpower Development Program in 2011. Under the mentorship of Professor Phillip Fleshner and his group of 9 senior colorectal surgeons, she completed a year of advanced colon and rectal surgery training at the world-renowned Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in the United States. During her fellowship, she became especially well versed in the diagnosis, endoscopic and surgical management of diseases of the colon, rectum and anus. She is currently an international member of both the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

As one of the pioneer surgeons for the Jurong Health campus (National University Health Services), Adj Asst Prof Cheryl was a founding member of the colorectal surgery division and the Surgical Trauma lead in Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. She was actively involved in hospital planning and chaired the general surgery division of the peer review-learning committee, electronic medical records governance committee among others.

She was also appointed the Chief Surgeon and steered the hospital to its first successful completion of the Ministry of Health Emergency preparedness Mass Casualty exercise in 2018, the first hospital in Singapore to succeed in its first pass.

Passionate in the teaching of the next generation of surgeons, Adj Asst Prof Cheryl was the Residency Program Director for Surgery-in-general Residents and the Research Director lead for the surgical specialties. She is currently a Clinical Lecturer with Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. She is also an instructor for the Advanced Trauma Life Support Course and a teacher for the national FRCS Viva course for training surgeons. She received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in undergraduate teaching and the Best Teacher (Surgery) Award in Jurong Health Campus. She has hospital research grants for clinical quality research in 2015 -2017. She has authored numerous research articles and book chapters, including 2 publications in the prestigious Annals of Surgery Journal and is an invited reviewer for many international journals.

Patients are at the heart of all that she does; Adj Asst Prof Cheryl has received yearly awards for her clinical care including Service Quality Champion in 2017. She believes in holistic patient care and in providing the best outcomes for her patients.
