Urology is a surgical specialty that focuses on the treatment of diseases affecting the urinary tract.
The urinary system, also known as the renal system or urinary tract, consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and the urethra. The urinary system eliminates waste from the body, regulates blood volume and blood pressure, and controls levels of electrolytes. Urology deals with problems affecting the kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra, as well as the adrenal glands for conditions such as urinary tract infections, kidney stones, stress incontinence and bladder cancer.
It also deals with the male reproductive system and its organs, including the prostate, testes, epididymis, prostate, penis, vas deferens, and seminal vesicles. Due to its close proximity to the reproductive system, diseases of one tend to affect the other. Urologic cancers are cancers of organs in the urinary system, such as bladder cancer, renal cancer, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. A common prostate disorder common Benign Prostatic Hyperplaysia (BPH), that shares similar symptoms to prostate cancer.
