Full Body PET-CT with GA68-PSMA

A Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan is an imaging test that uses radioactive substance to measure important body functions. These scans can show how well organs and tissues are working, which are useful for disease detection before it is evident on other imaging tests. Most PET scanners now have an integrated CT scanner to provide improved anatomic localization and more accurate interpretation of the PET images.

68Ga-PSMA^* represents a major advancement in detecting prostate cancer. It is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that can detect prostate cancer cells in the body 100 -1000 times more accurately than traditional methods. 

Purpose of PET-CT scan with Ga68-PSMA

High sensitivity and specificity in detection of prostate cancer cells in regional nodes. Detects both primary and metastatic lesions. A study performed on those who have had their prostate gland removed (prostatectomy) showed an increase in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood levels.

Preparing for the Procedure

• No preparation or fasting is required
• Unless specified, you may continue with prescribed medication
• If you have existing medical conditions such as allergies, heart conditions, asthma and/or are diabetic, you are required to inform their doctor prior to the scan
• You are required to bring along your recent X-ray, scan (CT, MRI and PET) reports and recent blood test results (if any)
• Language interpretation services are available if required

Procedure

• Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled time
• An intravenous line will be placed for the administration of radiotracer
• You will be required to remain in a holding area for around 45 minutes
• You will be required to empty your bladder prior to the scan.
• The scan will take approximately 20 minutes
• Your doctor will advise if a follow-up examination is needed

Post Procedure

• The radiotracer will quickly decay and be excreted through your urine
• Normal activities can be resumed after the scan
• Avoid close contact with infants or pregnant women for at least 8 hours
• A medical imaging specialist will review the scans and submit the report to your doctor
• Your doctor will advise if a follow-up examination is needed
