As part of our ongoing effort to improve prostate cancer treatment, Farrer Park Hospital (FPH) has made available the Focal One High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) treatment for Prostate Cancer. The procedure is available for all urologists who want to deliver precision focal therapy for their patients.
To facilitate the learning of prostate cancer treatment using Focal One HIFU, we have prepared a Live Surgery Workshop on 18 and 19 November 2019 for urologists, together with a Continuing Medical Education for general practitioners as well as a training for our hospital's nurses. The Singapore Urological Association supported the workshops.
The workshop commenced with FPH's Medical Board Chairman, Dr Richard Chew's opening address, followed by an introduction to the hospital's Focal Therapy programme by urologists Dr Sam Peh and Dr Chong Kian Tai on the management of localised prostate cancer.
Professor Peter Lim chaired the workshop session which featured other specialists including Dr Tay Kae Jack from the Singapore General Hospital, as well as Dr Tarek Ghoneim from Foch Hospital, France. Through these peer learning workshops, we aim to enhance the knowledge and advance the specialty of urology in Singapore.
"The Focal One device is a robotic-assisted HIFU machine that was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in June 2018 and subsequently by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) in Singapore. The four cases that both Dr Peh and Dr Chong have scheduled to coincide with the workshop marked the beginning of localised prostate cancer treatment using the Focal One in this region," said Dr Chew.
Dr Tay also remarked, "As urologists, we have to be technology agnostic and adopt the best technology in the given circumstance, given what is available". He shared the effectiveness of Focal Therapy in comparison to other forms of treatments for Prostate Cancer.
This workshop has been an eye-opening learning experience for the participants as it engages both our medical specialists and general practitioners to gain a holistic understanding of Focal Therapy and its benefits. As FPH aims to provide new solutions for our patients, we will continue to reach out and offer learning opportunities that benefit our medical fraternity and community.
