What is Interventional Radiology?

Interventional Radiology is a subspecialty of Radiology in which both vascular and non-vascular diseases are diagnosed and treated using minimally invasive procedures that are performed via a percutanous approach under fluoroscopy​, ultrasound or CT​ guidance.
 

What Interventional Radiology tests are available?

They are an alternative or complement to open surgery, including:

  • Treatment of vascular disease, such as angioplasty, stent placement or coiling
  • Placement of drains to relieve fluid accumulation or obstruction, such as nephrostomy, biliary drain, ascites drainage
  • Treatment of tumours, such as chemoebolisation or radiofrequency ablation
  • Placement of catheters for central venous access, such as PICC, PermCath or Port-A Cath
