Diabetes Mellitus Treatment

How is Diabetes treated?

Diabetes is also known as diabetes mellitus and is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by abnormally high blood sugar levels.

Diabetes is treated with different medications that are in oral and intravenous form. There are two types of diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2.

Type 1 diabetes

The main treatment for Type 1 diabetes is insulin that replaces the hormone your body isn’t able to produce. Insulin is administered through injections a few times daily and oral medications are taken as well. Several types of insulin are available, they work at different speeds and last different lengths of time. Insulin can be administered through a needle and syringe, an insulin pen or an insulin pump.

Type 2 diabetes

The main treatment for Type 2 diabetes are diet and medication. Most people with type 2 diabetes are prescribed metformin pills that lower the glucose levels in your blood. Metformin can be combined with other glucose reducing medication. Other than medication, a meal plan and lifestyle modifications are part of diabetes treatment.
