A Young Woman with Aortic Insufficiency
Case presentation of a young woman with aortic insufficiency. The history, physical findings, differential diagnosis, investigations and treatment of aortic insufficiency will be presented and discussed. We will illustrate how the use of imaging techniques aid in the diagnosis and management of this patient. Histopathological findings assist in confirming the underlying pathology. The use of genetic testing for aortic diseases will be mentioned. Finally, the plan for continued surveillance and treatment will be discussed.

Dr. Ruth Kam
Cardiologist

Dr. Kam began her medical career at the National Heart Centre where she last served as Senior Consultant in 2004. She obtained her basic medical degree from the National University of Singapore (1986) and was a President’s Scholar (1981 to 1985). She did her training in Internal Medicine and obtained her MRCP (UK) in 1990 and Master of Internal Medicine (Singapore) in 1991. She then obtained her specialist training in Cardiology at the Singapore General Hospital (1991-1994), and proceeded on to a scholarship to Massachusetts General Hospital (USA) where she was further trained in Cardiac Electrophysiology and Catheter Ablation (1994-1995) and in Cardiac Pacemaker and Defibrillator Implantation (1995-1996).
She was also a research fellow in Medicine at Harvard University (1994-1995). In 1997, she passed the special competency examination in cardiac pacing and defibrillation set by the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology (NASPE).  In 1998, she obtained her Fellowship in the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. In 2000, she obtained her FRCP from the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh.

Besides electrophysiology and pacing, her other main areas of interest are in preventive cardiology , sports and fitness, and healthy cooking.

She has published 31 original articles in peer reviewed journals and 65 abstracts in scientific meetings.  She has participated in multicenter pacemaker studies such as the SAFE study. 
 

Dr. Lim Chong Hee
Cardiothoracic Surgeon

Dr. Lim graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the National University of Singapore in 1990. Thereafter, he earned his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) in 1994. He furthered his training in cardiothoracic surgery at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, USA where he trained amongst the best cardiothoracic surgeons in the world. As of 2002,
Dr. Lim has been a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.

Dr. Lim has 25 years of clinical experience in cardiothoracic surgery. His clinical interests are in Minimally Invasive Lung Surgery, Heart Valve Repair and Replacement, Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery, Aortic Aneurysm Surgery and Esophagectomy for esophageal cancers. He has special interest in Heart/Lung Failure pioneering in Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) and implantation of Left Ventricular Assist Devices.  

Prior to private practice, Dr. Lim had served at the National Heart Centre, Singapore for over 20 years. He is presently appointed there as visiting consultant.

Other than his clinical work, Dr. Lim had contributed to the NUS Medical Faculty as Senior Lecturer and held the appointment of Adjunct Associate Professor with the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, where he taught and tutored future doctors. He has held various appointments in the Chapter of Cardiothoracic Surgeons in the College of Surgeons, Singapore such as Honorary Secretary (2005-2009) and Chairman (2009-2013).  

He has lectured in many regional and international conferences, such as the ASEAN Federation of Cardiology, Annual Meeting of Asian Society for Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery and International Cardiology Conference.

He is also an active researcher in the areas of cardiothoracic surgery, heart and lung transplantation, video-assisted thoracic surgery and the mechanical heart assist device. He is involved in various government-funded programmes.

 

Dr. Cheng Yew Kuang
Rheumatologist

Dr. Cheng is currently an Allergist and Rheumatologist at Allergy, Arthritis & Rheumatism Clinic.
Dr. Cheng received his basic medical training at the National University of Singapore. He began his specialist training in Rheumatology, Immunology and Allergy at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Thereafter, he was awarded a scholarship by the Singapore Ministry of Health to train at the Mayo Clinic of Rochester, Minnesota, (U.S.A.) in 2004. Upon his return, he established the immunotherapy service for insect venom allergy; the first in Singapore. He then served as Consultant Physician at the Department of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology, Tan Tock Seng Hospital (Singapore) before leaving for private practice. Despite his hectic schedule in private practice, Dr. Cheng remains a visiting consultant to both National University Hospital and Changi General Hospital where he continues public service developing the specialty of allergy and rheumatology.

Dr. Cheng is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine with the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, where he continues to teach both undergraduate and postgraduate students. He is the Vice President, Section of Clinical Immunology & Allergy, Academy of Medicine.
Dr. Cheng also sits on the Board of Farrer Park Hospital (Singapore) and Management Committee of Saint Andrew’s Community Hospital (Singapore). He is also a Board Member of Asia Pacific League Against Rheumatism (APLAR) and chairs the APLAR Young Rheumatologist network (Asia Pacific).

 

Dr. Seto Kar Yin
Diagnostic Radiologist


Dr. Seto obtained his basic medical degree from National University of Singapore in 1990. After completing National Service as Medical Officer in the Singapore Armed Forces, he obtained Ministry of Health (MOH) traineeship in Diagnostic Radiology and completed Basic Specialist Training (BST) in Singapore and obtained Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists of the United Kingdom in the year 2000.  This was followed by completion of Advanced Specialist Training (AST) in Radiology administered by the Singapore
Specialist Accreditation Board.

During AST, Dr. Seto focused on Interventional Radiology and Body Imaging, following which he obtained Certificate of Specialist Accreditation from MOH and Certificate of Specialist Registration from the Singapore Medical Council in 2003.  In 2004, he received the MOH Health Manpower Development Programme (HMDP) fellowship in Cardiac MR imaging of paediatric and adult congenital heart diseases at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children and the Toronto General Hospital.

After working for 10 years from year 2000 to 2010 in National University Hospital, Dr. Seto joined as a founding member of JurongHealth and worked in Alexandra Hospital followed by Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. In JurongHeath, Dr. Seto was Senior Consultant Interventional Radiologist where he provided vascular interventions as well as interventional oncology services. His other specialised services include Cardiac MRI and Contrast Ultrasonography.  Dr. Seto’s administrative roles encompass oversight of the hospital’s Angiography laboratory and Radiology PACS (Picture Archival and Communication System). He was Chairman of the Technical Evaluation Committee for JurongHealth Cluster PACS for Radiology Project.

Dr. Seto was also co-appointed Clinical Lecturer with the National University of Singapore, teaching of NUS medical students.

In 2018 Dr. Seto left the public service to join Farrer Park Hospital as Senior Radiologist and Head of the Diagnostic Imaging Suite. He is also a member of various radiological societies, including committee member of the Interventional Radiology Subsection of the College of Radiologist and a reviewer of various medical journals.
