Cancer patients or survivors may feel self-conscious when it comes to the social aspect of things. Questions like “How do I explain my condition to my colleagues or superiors?” may arise. It is good to think these through before returning to better prepare yourself. Seeking guidance from your doctor, counselor or social worker helps too. Remember, it is still your privacy and you can decide how much to share with others.
Sometimes you may feel like you are not able to join in regular social activities with colleagues (e.g. welcome lunch or celebratory dinner) – do not feel bad about being honest with it and have the courage to decline where necessary. Keep communications open and honest, and let your colleagues know you do not feel up to it right now, and that you hope to join them when you feel better.
