Revised mask-wearing requirements at our Medical Centre and Hospital

Nicholas Zhu

Senior Staff Nurse, Emergency Clinic

When asked what a day in the life of an emergency clinic (EC) nurse was like amidst COVID-19, Senior Staff Nurse Nicholas Zhu smiled and said: “Full PPE for hours with perspiration trickling down our neck.”

Having witnessed the SARS outbreak in 2003, Nicholas knew exactly what he needed to do when COVID-19 struck the world: stay calm and follow infection control measures.

“As a nurse in the EC, we are like the gatekeepers of the hospital. We have to be prepared and ready for all emergency situations. From dealing with uncertainties or an unknown situation, we have to adapt quickly and always be ready.”

The last seven years in EC has taught Nicholas the importance of resilience and staying vigilant. During the early stages of the coronavirus outbreak, there were many uncertainties and no one knew how contagious the disease was. Though he is a nurse, he also had fears of bringing the virus home to his loved ones.

“But on the flip side of the coin, I’m confident with our hospital system and the infection control measures that are put in place to manage the situation. By adhering to these strict measures, we are not only protecting ourselves but our loved ones as well.”

When asked about what motivates him to keep going despite the long hours and risks, Nicholas highlighted that this pandemic is not an exercise; these are extraordinary times that requires extraordinary measures.

“I see my colleagues and healthcare workers all over Singapore stepping up and doing their part to contribute in this nationwide fight against COVID-19. There are difficult and tiring moments for sure, but the sight of everyone working hand in hand is what gives me the strength and will to keep going.”
