Neck and back pain are one of the leading causes of disability and the burden of the disease is expected to increase with an aging population. Often, the pain is self-limiting but sometimes, they may herald a more sinister pathology or have associated injury to the neural elements.

This CME lunch talk will discuss some of the causes of neck and back pain, and what to watch out for with examples given to identify such patients.

Dr Mohammad Mashfiqul Arafin Siddiqui
Orthopedic Surgeon
 

 Dr Mohammad Mashfiqul Arafin Siddiqui was a consultant Orthopedic and Spinal Surgeon at the Singapore General Hospital and a visiting consultant at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital prior to joining The Orthopaedic Centre. He was also a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the National University of Singapore YLL School of Medicine and part of the core faculty for Singhealth Orthopedic Residents. He has extensive experience in both general orthopedics and spinal surgery and has travelled to multiple countries in Asia giving lectures and demonstrating his surgical techniques.

Dr Siddiqui obtained his basic medical degree from the National University of Singapore. He subsequently pursued his post-graduate training in Orthopedic Surgery in Singapore and obtained his fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He later underwent further training in Spinal Surgery at The Royal Alexandra Hospital, University of Alberta Hospital and the Stollery Children’s Hospital, under renowned spinal surgeons from both orthopedic and neurosurgical background.

Dr Siddiqui is an advocate of using minimal-access surgical techniques to decrease post-operative pain and quicken recovery. He is well versed in the usage of 2D and 3D computer aided navigation systems to improve surgical safety and outcome. Other than general orthopedics, Dr Siddiqui’s areas of interest include spinal degeneration (both in the neck and back), prolapsed intervertebral disc (slipped disc), cervical disc replacement (replacing the discs in the neck), spinal deformity (such as scoliosis) and spinal tumors. He is one of the few surgeons in Singapore experienced in dealing with resection of massive sacral tumors and subsequent reconstruction of the spine to the pelvis.

During his 15 years in public healthcare, Dr Siddiqui has presented at numerous international meetings including those of the International Society of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, North American Spine Society, European Society of Sports, Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy, Asia Pacific Orthopedic Surgeons as well as the Global Spine Congress and the International Meeting on Advanced Spine Techniques. He also regularly contributes scientific content to the Singapore Orthopedic Association's annual meeting and is a reviewer for multiple journals including the prestigious “The Spine Journal”.
